Colostrum is a particularly sustainable product. Colostrum is mother nature's first super food. It is the first form of milk produced by the mammary glands immediately following of a newborn.
What is colostrum?
Colostrum is a mammals first milk. Essential for each new born.
Colostrum contains immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase, growth factors and oligosaccharides. All mammals need these ingredients. Most importantly, calves need these ingredients in colostrum because they’re born without natural defenses. The immunoglobulin G in colostrum is well known, because it can be absorbed by the mammal and provides natural defense.
What ingredients does colostrum consist and what do they do?
Immunoglobins are important for preventing and fighting infections in the human organism
IgG provides most of the immunity against invading pathogens. IgM is the first Ig to react when pathogens invade. After this, IgD gives a signal to the B cells that have to take action whilst IgA ensures that the pathogens do not colonize. The last Ig named IgE plays a role in allergenic reactions.
Lactoferrin removes vital iron from bacteria. This is very useful because bacteria depend on iron. If the iron is removed from the bacteria, this has an antibacterial effect.
Lactoperoxidase is an iron-binding glycoprotein. This is one of the antimicrobial components of the immune system that combats bacteria and fungi in the body.
Growth factors help stimulate cell growth, cell differentiation and cell maturation. The two most common growth factors are IgF-I and IgF-II. Igf-I mediates wound healing and muscle cell growth and IgF-II mediates wound healing during the fetal phase.
Oligosaccharides with prebiotic effect are naturally present in colostrum and can improve the growth of probiotic micro-organisms such as lactobacilli and bifidobacteria.
From liquid to powder, from powder to capsule.
When the colostrum has been processed into colostrum powder, it is widely used. In animal feed it is usually used as an ingredient in luxury starter milks or as a 100% colostrum substitute. It is also used in petfood, such as luxury puppy/ kitten food or recovery. Application in human use is mainly to strengthen immunity or accelerate (muscle) recovery of the body. Colostrum is a dietary supplement that can be taken as a tablet, capsule, powder in shake, yogurt or fruit juice or in functional foods.
